THE LIGHT LETTER

GOOD MORNING LIGHT LETTER HEADS! What we are about to tell you is a real thing, as much as you will hesitate to believe it.

Today is NATIONAL BOOCH DAY. How do you observe #boochday? Kick back and have a kombucha with your friends of course. So put your coffee aside and grab your booch to sip alongside the Light Letter.

Carry on.

By The Numbers: Perception

We are not good at perception. Big and unseen things confuse us. Don’t believe me?

1 million seconds is 11.5 days. Can you tell me how many days 1 billion seconds is?

In our heads the two are similar numbers. Million and Billion. Both Massive.

But 1 billion seconds is 31.7 years.
That is a difference of 31.67 years. 🤯

That stat made me wonder what else we misperceive. Naturally, things like time and space came to mind.

And then a friend texted me. “Having you in my life has truly changed me for the better. I don’t think any of us hear enough about the impact we have on others…”

First off, adorable. And yes, I cried.
Second off, I didn’t have any idea I’d made any sort of impact.

It was obvious from the moment I got the text:
We are just as bad at perceiving our impact as we are at perceiving time.

People talk a lot about trauma and the ways to heal from it.
That’s important.
But we almost never talk about the people who quietly undo it.

They don’t do it loudly or from behind a podium.
They do it through their character and their daily actions.
They model healthy relationships, healthy habits, and happy existences that are real and worked on.

They often do it without a clue how profoundly it alters the people around them.

So thank you.

To Brandon for modeling a healthy relationship.
To Maddi for showing me it’s good to do hard shit.
To Alvaro for reminding me how to have deep conversations.
To Kyle for showing me it’s okay to play.
To Laura for showing me hard work can be fun.
To Meghann for showing me how to find a deeper connection with life.
To Brad for role modeling life’s important stuff like laughter.

You may not see the rippling impact you have in the world.

But I do. And it’s a pretty sight.

Most of us will never see the full math of the good we do.
So take a lesson from my friend. Don’t be afraid to thank the rare ones before it’s too late.

This Week’s Inspiration

  • Do you know what kind of person needs to stretch when they turn 30? Here is a comprehensive breakdown.

  • Book Rec: The Words of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Quotes like this make it a must read: “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgment. Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?”

  • This video has changed how we do chores in the Light Letter Factory.

Forrest’s Notebook
Scamper Quietly

I used to scamper quietly
Afraid the power of my noise
I confused being seen as being caught
So I wrapped my opinions in paper towels before I threw them away.

Until next time,

Live your light.
