Deep Dive: Discipline

Meditation has been described to me as the act of finding your way back. It's not about a perfect empty mind or some zen bliss state. It's about strengthening your ability to come back to the present. Every interrupting thought is a chance to practice returning. Meditation is the practice of rewiring your brain to be stronger. So that you can be more present in day to day life.

As teacher Sharon Salzberg puts it: "Beginning again and again is the actual practice."

I didn't realize that discipline is the same way. Missing a day happens. It happens to everyone. But that's how habits start. Rocky at first. One step forward. One step back. Until you're strong enough to stay locked in.

Research has proven that missing multiple days back-to-back derails people far more than missing just one. It's the noticing and returning quickly that protects you. But what I found more interesting is that how you talk to yourself on a miss matters just as much. People who rebounded quickly treated the miss as an exception. The people who struggled to rebound let the miss rewrite their identity.

That's why I changed how I think about discipline.

It isn’t a drag. It’s not a chore. It's an opportunity to believe in yourself. It’s a belief that you never know what brilliance lives in the minute you decided not to give up on. A belief that you can do it. That it's worth doing.
The return is the belief.
